Пожалуй, это не связано с гениальностью, гени- ями точно рождаются, а не становятся, а вот популярность и успех вещи другого порядка. Что это для вас – судьба или личный труд? – Правильное время + правильное место, а также личный труд… Как говорил Геракл: «Твой характер – это твоя судьба». – Могут ли сегодня существовать национальные школы, когда ита- льянский дизайнер делает для немецкого бренда, а, к примеру, египтя- нин или выходец из Тель-Авива – для британской компании? – Я не верю в границы, особенно в границы в творчестве! – Вы, видимо, обладаете высокой степенью культурной толерантно- сти? Как вам живется между тремя принципиально отличными друг от друга городами – Чикаго, Анкарой и Миланом? – Меня всегда привлекал опыт общения с различными культура- ми. Для меня это в большей степени собственное обогащение, не- жели культурная толерантность. Мне понравилась эта ваша забав- ная фраза «… высокая степень культурной толерантности» Я родом из Турции; Милан (Италия) – это место, где я строю свою профессиональную культуру. Я работала с несколькими компания- ми из разных европейских стран, кроме того, у меня богатый и ин- тересный опыт работы с дальневосточным регионом, особенно с Японией… Культура в США абсолютно другая по сравнению со сре- диземноморскими странами, где я много работала. Думаю, что США может оказаться тем местом, где можно столкнуться с другим обра- зом мышления и поиском различных решений. Мне очень импони- рует динамизм и энтузиазм Турции. Я обожаю творческий и практи- ческий подход итальянцев, а также уважаю терпение и любозна- тельность американцев. – Архитектор Арон Бецки говорит о явных чертах мужского и женского в архитектуре, насколько очевидна гендерная проблема- тика в дизайне? – Я не верю в гендерную дифференциацию в творчестве. – Мне кажется, что Миланский мебельный салон стал чем-то из ряда must see. Творчество дизайнера Дэфне Коз (Defne Koz) – очень характерный сплав турецких традиций с итальянской культурой. Прибавьте к этому влияние харизматичного лидера группы «Мемфис» Этторе Соттсасса, ко- торый был ее учителем, немного американского космополитизма, «за- работанного» за годы практики ее студии в Чикаго, и вы получите неве- роятно крепкий коктейль темперамента, креатива, эффект от которого усилен революционным духом рубежа веков. Интерес к новым техно- логиям быстро перестал быть главным ориентиром, подвинувшись, он уступил первенство традициям ручной работы. У Дэфне не бывает обы- денных объектов, «средний дизайн» и «среднее качество» на практи- ке ей не знакомы, а вот выбор золотой середины – один из принципов не только творчества, но и жизни. Он помогает дизайнеру находить ба- ланс и компромисс между потребностями и желаниями, воображаемым и действительным, между прошлым и будущим. – Со стороны кажется, что творческие люди самые счастливые. Это так? – Похоже, что так. И я думаю, что мы, дизайнеры, тоже счастли- вы: определенно, нам нравится брать от жизни все! Я бы сказала, что все творческие люди – художники, дизайне- ры, писатели, режиссеры – видят гораздо глубже и могут прида- вать большее значение нашей жизни, ее повседневности, предме- там, которые нас окружают; это может сделать нас более счастли- выми. Возможно, это происходит потому, что, когда нам что-то не нравится, мы думаем, что сможем исправить, переделать в лучшую сторону, но в результате мы продолжаем жить в мешанине, состоя- щей из фактической реальности и нашего воображения. Это также является рецептом фрустрации, но я этого не говорила. – Чему вы еще посвящаете свое время, силы и средства, кроме дизайна? – Я пытаюсь следить за современным искусством и искусством вообще.… Люблю ходить по галереям и музеям. Люблю путеше- ствовать и открывать для себя новое… Очень интересуюсь архи- тектурой… Я готова отдать что угодно, чтобы достать билеты на хорошие концерты, в театры, на выступления современных тан- цевальных коллективов… Кстати, мне очень нравится проводить

DEFNE KOZ | Interview by Anna Lengle | Photos provided by Defne Koz Defne Koz’s art is a very characteristic fusion of Turkish traditions and Italian culture. Some additions like the influence of Ettore Sotssass, the charismatic leader of Memphis group who was her teacher, some American cosmopolit- ism acquired when practicing in Chicago make it an incredibly strong cocktail of temper and creative art which is amplified by the revolu- tionary spirit of the edge of two centuries. The interest to new technologies quickly ceased to be her main guide, it stepped aside giving way to handicraft traditions. Defne doesn’t have everyday objects, average design and average quality is something she is not familiar with, while the golden mean is one of the principles of her art and her life. It helps the designer to find the balance and compromise between the needs and desires, the imaginable and the real, the past and the future. – It seems from outside, that artists are the happiest people. Is this really so? – Yes, probably they are. But I believe we de- signers are happy too: we definitely love to en- joy life! I’d say all creative people, like artists, de- signers, writers, directors, can see more deeply and can give more meaning to everyday life, to its routines, to the objects that surround us; that might make us more happy. Maybe it’s also the fact that when we don’t like some- thing we think we can redesign it, and we end

Did the last salon open something new for you, something that you pointed out for yourself? What does this event mean for you? – Generally speaking Salone became more of a social event, which is very nice…Fifteen years ago Salone was already addressed to both Italian and International designers, but it was more of an “elite” event. Now, you see the entire city is taking part of the “happen- ing”…seeing families with grandpa, with kids and friends who have nothing in common with design, sneaking into exhibitions, or at least strolling on the streets with a huge interest, makes me happy. This is something that I like. Design became more “popolare”, not anymore a ‘status symbol’. – There is an interesting opinion that ar- chitects don’t invent the form, they just convert the reality and this is actually their task. Does designer invent anything? – I don’t think this is a difference between

That’s also the recipe for frustra- tion, but I’m not going to say it. – What do you dedicate your time and ef- fort to, except design? – I try to follow contemporary art, and art in general…love to go to galleries and muse- ums…like to travel and discover…interested very much in architecture and also whenever possible, I’m doing everything to get tickets for good modern dance performances, concerts, theaters…oh, by the way I enjoy a lot friends’ company, love to cook and enjoy nice, night- long dinners with interesting discussions. – Designer’s profession became famous, why some people become stars while oth- ers don’t? Probably it’s not connected with genius, geniuses are born, not made, while popularity and success are things of a dif- ferent nature. What is it for you – your des- tiny or your personal effort? – Right timing + right place and also your personal effort… As Heracles said “your char- acter is your destiny.” – Can there be national schools today, when an Italian designer makes things for a German brand, an Egyptian or a person from Tel Aviv designs for a British company? – I do not believe in borders, especially I don’t believe in borders about creativity! – You must have a high degree of cultur- al tolerance, is that right?
