Зеленая зона делится на две прак- тически симметричные части необъятной стеклянно-бетонной «доли- ной» – образно отражающей притязание человека на вторжение в пейзаж. В результате здание имеет вид холма с трещиной посереди- не, в которую ведет лестница, или из которой – в зависимости от точ- ки взгляда, служащая одновременно амфитеатром, где студенты могут расположиться на отдых. Проницаемые стены внутри трещины, под- держиваемые алюминиевыми опорами, тем временем обеспечива- ют достаточное количество естественного освещения даже на ниж- них этажах и «держат связь» интерьера с экстерьером. Венчающая бинарную структуру крыша скрывает все следы пребывания под ней огромного здания, которое члены жюри конкурса назвали даже «ма- леньким городом». Первоначально в планах было озеленить кровлю деревьями, одна- ко крыша неспособна выдерживать слой почвы, достаточный для их выращивания, так что сейчас ее украшают трава и кустарники. Тем не менее, ландшафт крыши производит впечатление совершенно есте- ственного образования, и временами даже сложно осознать его ру- котворность.

Besides Perrault, among the members of the competition were also Zaha Hadid and Foreign Office Architects (FOA). Ultimately, the commission was awarded to Perrault for his scheme’s sensitivity to land- scape and his solution to rebuild the site’s original topography. The green zone is divided into seemingly cloned halves by an immense glass-and-concrete rift, or «valley»—a strong assertion of contemporary intervention into the landscape. The resulting building looks like a hill with a rift in the middle that ter- minates at a grand stairway, which also serves as an open-air amphitheater or an informal seating area. Transparent walls, supported by an aluminium framing system, provide natu- ral light to the lowest interior levels and «con- nect» interior spaces with exterior. Surmount- ing the binary structure, a green roof conceals the footprints of the building so large that the judges of the competition called it «a little city.» At the outset, Perrault intended to plant trees on the roof, which, however, would not bear the thick layer of soil and would only per- mit grass and shrubs. Nonetheless, the con- structed roofscape produces a natural effect,
