quality works. Therefore I wholeheartedly support the design, which was awarded with the 1st and the 2nd prizes – the glass cube of BERNASKONI Studio. The concept and ideas of it are de­ veloped in a new quality, in new materials. A new offer is made, and it seems to me that it is quite within the mainstream of the remarkable Russian avantguarde architecture.

– I have to agree with opinion of some judges, that we ex­ pected a much brighter (but certainly not vulgar) creative up­ swing, a kind of a parade of masterpieces developed by the in­ vited stars and not only by them… That is why in the beginning the jury did not pay attention to the most serious and creatively mature works. To be more exact, I think that the basic difficulty in the discussion of the Contest works consisted in a fairly free attitude of the participants to the design assignment given by the Contest orderer! It became the subject of serious disputes, which almost led to a crisis, but which were luckily overcome due to the wise decisions of the jurymen and the ability of Pe­ ter Zumtor, the chairman of the jury, to find compromises ac­ ceptable for all the parties. That is why conceptual, creative, unchained from the preconceived notions designs were present­ ed together with the bright design solutions, which could easily be put into life. Certainly, the discussion of the designs without the experts’ conclusions were not possible, but very often such conclusions of the experts’ committee were limited by … an as­ sessment of the presented artistic image or even of the contest­ ant ‘s creative abilities! By the mutual decision of the jurymen such information was not taken into account in order not to in­ fluence the free choice of the high jury. The choice was made and it was a collective decision.

– Вынужден согласиться с мнением некото- рых членов жюри, что ожидание рисовало бо- лее яркий (но, конечно, не ярмарочный) твор- ческий взлет, парад шедевров от приглашен- ных звезд и не только… Может быть, поэтому в начале работы жюри по настоящему серьез- ные, творчески зрелые работы не сразу были увидены. На мой взгляд, основная трудность при рассмотрении конкурсных работ заключа- лась в достаточно свободном отношении учас- тников к заданию на проектирование от заказ- чика конкурса! Именно это стало предметом серьезных споров, едва не приведших к кризи- су, но благополучно преодоленному благодаря взвешенным решениям членов жюри и мудро- му поиску компромиссов председателя жюри г-на Петера Цумтора. Так что представлены были как концептуальные, творчески раско- ванные проекты, так и проекты, блиставшие решениями, близкими к возможной реализа- ции. Конечно, рассмотрение проектов без экс- пертных заключений было бы вряд ли возмож- но, но часто выводы эксперта заканчивались… оценкой художественного образа и чуть ли не творческими способностями конкурсанта! По общему решению, такая информация не зачи- тывалась, чтобы не влиять на свободный вы- бор высокого жюри. Выбор состоялся, и это – коллективное решение.
