The Lion of Florence, the Hare of Pisa, the Stork of Peгugia, the Dragon of Pistoja, are all to Ье seen in these simple mosaics, if one chooses to consider them as sucl1, haгdly more than vvhite silhouettes, and yet full of life and vigour. The effect is tЬat of а vast piece of }асе, - the real cut ,voгk of tЬе pcriod. Absurd little trees, as space filleгs, are set in the green and ,vhite mагЫс. Every reader vvill remembeг how Ruskin was entlшsi­ astic over these little creatures, and no one can fail to feel thei1· chaгm. The pavements at the Florentine Baptistery авd at San Miniato are intcгesting examples of inlay in Ыасk and white шаrЫе. They are early ,vo1·ks, and are the natural forerнnneгs of the шaгvelloнs pavemeпt at Siena, ,vhich is tlie most remarkaЫe of its kind in the world. The paveшent mastel'f; ,voгked in Yarying methods. The first of tl1ese was the joining together of laгge flat pieces of marЬle, cut in the shapes of tЬе general design, and then outlining on theш an actual Ыасk dra,Ying Ьу шeans of deeply снt chanпels, filled ,vitl1 haгd Ыасk cement. Tl1e chaпnels ,vere fiгst cut supeгficially and then eшphasized апd deepened Ьу the use of а drill, in а seгies of holes. Lateг ,vorkers used Ыасk шаrЫеs for the backgrounds, 1·ed for tlie grouпd, апd ,,·hite for the figures, sometimes adding touches of yello,v inlay fш decorations, jewels, and so forth.
