TJ1e detail of minute animal and vegetaЫe forms - tЬе flora апd fauna, as it were in woгsted - are unique for their conscientious finish. Tl1ey alшost amount to catalogues of plaвts and beasts. ТЬе one which displays Sumшeг is а herbal and а Noah's Агk tшned loose аЬопt а full-sized Classical Deity, who presides in the centre of the coшposition. Among Eпglish шakers of tapest1·ies ,vas а workman пашсd John Bakes, who was paid the magnificent sшn of t,velve репсе а day, while in an entгy in another clocшneпt he is said to liave received only fourpeпce daily. The Huвting Tapestries belonging to tЬе Duke of Devoпshire are as perfect specimeпs as any that exist of the best period of tl1e art. They are 1·epгeseпted iп colour in \V. G. Thomsoп's admiraЬle ,voгk on Tapes­ t1·ies, and are thus availaЬle to most reade1·s iп some puЫic collection. Another splendidly decorati:ve specimen is at Hamptoп Сошt, being а series of the Seven Deadly Sins. They measшe about twenty-five Ьу tblrteen feet each, and are worked in heavy wools and silks. As technical facility developed, certaiв weaknesses began to show theшselves.
