Unhappily there are по remains of this inte1·esting шonument now exist­ ing. The neaгest thing to the Bayeux Tapestry in general texture and style is pe1·l1aps а twelfth centuгy \Уогk in tl1e Cathedral at Gerona, а little over four yai·ds square, which is worked in cre,Yels on linen, and is ornamented with scenes of an Oriental and pгimitive character, taken mainly fгоm the stoгy of Genesis. These tapes­ tries come under the head of needlework. The tapestries made оп looms proceed upon а different principle, and are woven instead of emb1·oidered. Т\УО kiпds of looms \\·еге used under varying conditions in different places; high ,vагр looms, or Haute Lisse, and low ,varp looms, known as Basse J.;isse. The general method of making tapestries оп а high \Yarp loom has been шuch tl1e same fог many centшies. The warp is stretched vertically in t\\'0 sets, every other tliread being first forward and then back in the setting. М.
