Monuments of early Russian architecture hold an honoured place in the world's architectural heritage. The Cathedral of St. Sofia in Kiev. the Moscow and Novgorod Kremlins, the Church of the Intercession on the Kiver Neri. the churches and civic buildings in Vladimir. Suzdal, Pskov and Yaroslavl arc all notable examples of the national architectural tradi tion and are famous throughout the world. Limited space has made it possible to show only a few of the many buildings which are the pride and joy of early Russian architecture. This album contains about 140 colour photographs of the most outstanding monumenL'\ from the I Ith to the end of the 17th centuries arranged in chronologicaJ order. The authors have tried to relate each monument to a certain architectural school. They have also included some specimens of wooden architcl:ture dating from the 18th century which show the deve lopment of national traditions.
