Кстати, на фасад в северной, более затененной, части выходят административные помещения, которым, в силу их небольшой площади и глубины, не требуется такое количество света, как расположенным на юге многосветному атриуму и читальным залам. В центре здания свое место заняли конференц-зал, выставочное пространство, гарде- роб, кафетерий и книжный магазин. Этажи с третьего по пятый организованы по одной схеме, на шестом два читальных зала, перекрытые стеклянной кровлей, позволяют читать непосред- ственно под небом, также здесь находятся комнаты индивиду- альных занятий. Для оформления интерьера архитекторы частично использо- вали разного рода схемы и диаграммы, частично привлекли ху- дожников. Например, рисунок на полу в читальном зале – не просто колористическое упражнение, это схема распределения зон, а рисунки на лестничных ограждениях, выходящих в атриум, выполнены по эскизам известных художников. Кстати, кое-что из мебели было сделано специально для объекта, создавая – к чему и стремились архитекторы – впечатление открытого и дру- желюбного интерьера. В результате, книга оказывается не источ- ником иногда слегка увядшей мудрости прошлого, она становит- ся лучшим способом общения.

open space in the west and a green part in the east. The three underground levels house book storage, technology and a parking lot; floors three to six host the library. Administrative premises open onto the facade in the north- ern shaded part of the building; due to their smaller size and depth they do not require as much daylight, as the multi-height atrium and reading halls located in the south. A congress hall, an exhibition hall, a cloakroom, a cafete- ria and a bookstore are located in the centre of the building. Floors three to five are arranged following the same pattern; the sixth floor has two reading halls topped with a glazed roof, giving a change to read under the sky; individ- ual study rooms are found here as well. In interior decoration the architects have both used charts and diagrams of various kinds and engaged artists. For example, the floor pattern in the reading hall is not merely a coloristic exercise; it is a scheme of zone ar- rangement. Artworks at staircases leading to the atrium were painted from sketches by re- nowned artists. Some of the furniture pieces were developed especially for this object, cre- ating an open and friendly feeling, which ex- actly what the architects aimed at. As a result, a book is not only a source of a slightly fad- ed wisdom of the past; it turns into the best means of communication.
