В российском культурном наследии органично сочетаются самые разнообразные направления искусства. Выражая данную идею в виде архитектурного образа, внешний вид Пермского музея современного искусства олицетворяет гармоничное взаимопроникающее сочетание богатейшего культурного наследия с неизведанным, но, несомненно, прекрасным будущим русской духовности. В контексте сказанного му- зей являет собой некий «ковчег». Этой смысловой нагрузке отвечает его внешняя форма; при этом здание музея создает изящное архитек- турное наполнение ландшафта, подчеркивая красоту русла реки. Внешняя поверхность здания сделана из двух отличающихся визу- ально, но идейно гармонирующих друг с другом материалов. Нижняя часть здания представляет собой металлическую зеркальную поверх- ность, в то время как верхняя часть здания отделана черным лакиро- ванным деревом. Нижняя часть рефлексирует, верхняя – поглощает свет. Нижняя и верхняя часть слегка отделены друг от друга, что поз- воляет свету проникать в помещение со всех сторон. Эта трещина ос- теклена. Экспозиционные и вспомогательные помещения группируются по принципу близкого использования вокруг ядра, в котором находятся холл, информационный центр и детская экспозиция.

Russian cultural heritage smoothly incorporates different art trends. Expressing this idea in the form of an architectur- al image, the outlook of the new Perm Museum of Modern Art personifies a harmonious interpenetrating combination of the richest cultural heritage with the novel and at the same time undoubtedly glorious future of the Russian spiritual develop- ment. In this context the Museum symbolizes a certain «ark». This semantic loading corresponds to the external shape of the building; and, on the other hand, it creates a graceful architec- tural addition to the landscape, emphasizing the natural beau- ty of the river-bed. The external surface of the building is made of two visually different materials, which are at the same time ideologically harmonious to each other. The ground part of the building rep- resents a smooth metal surface, while the upper part is faced with black varnished wood. The bottom part reflects and the top absorbs light. The bottom and top part are slightly sepa- rated from each other. This gives the opportunity to the light to penetrate into the rooms at different angles, since this separa- tion «crack» is glazed. In accordance with the centralization principle the show- rooms and the auxiliary services are grouped around the build- ing core, in which there is a hall, an information centre and a children’s exposition.
