habits and innovation and their mutual penetration remain the most adequate combination in architectural design.
this is what draws attention to Chinese architecture, and nobody minds it that the majority of projects are secondary, but this in turn speaks for the Chinese being diligent students. Works by MAD office are a collective image: a combination of works by Toyo Ito, Kolatan – Mac Donald, Himmelblau and UN Studio. Blob architecture mounted with minimalist domes happens to be popular in China. That is, the exhibition in the Dutch Centre for Architecture discusses the view these compilers have of the Chinese city of the future, where complex fantasy shapes will be combined with the natural environment and cultural heritage. Projects, ideas and views displayed at the exhibition are presented through models and audio-visual projections, where products of the digital design are accompanied with numerous interviews and discussions, in which members of the bureau have participated. In connection to the exhibition architects will conduct a workshop on computer design and modelling, the core of which will be constituted by a discussion on relations of technology, architecture, form and aesthetics. Getting prepared to lead the European culture next year, Liverpool has received another necessary attribute of the capital. It is worth noting that authorities associate the creative image that they are trying to create in many respects with public art attraction at the railway station square in the centre of the city. An 8 metres diameter ovoid has been cut from the facade of an ordinary six-floor office building and made to oscillate constantly, following a complex geometry. The «alienated» section of the facade rests on a giant spindle leading to the rotator mounted deep inside the building. Rotating clockwise, the disc gradually oscillates out of the plane and at a certain moment is perpendicular to the motherly wall, opening into the interior and revealing three floors inside. That way, the stunned audience sees a three-dimensional body emerging and vanishing again on the surface of the building. This «popular mechanics» launched at the beginning of

batteries and hydraulic power stations become evermore popular. The exhibition is dedicated to investigating the theories that emerged in the 1970s, but were abandoned due to lack of funds or enthusiasm, which gave rise to a new lifestyle, and are reflected in architecture in particular. Among the exhibits there are theoretic investigations as well as implemented projects by such architects as Steve Baer, Michael Jantzen,DouglasKelbaugh,Michael Reynolds and Malcolm Wells. Aesthetics of symbiosis 06.10.07–27.01.08 | Aesthetical spaces, Arkitekturmuseet, stockholm, sweden | www.arkitekturmuseet.se Partnership between architecture and art in the mid-XXth century is a kind of common decencies. Both parties were looking for new ways of expression in this interdisciplinary environment. David Hellden and Olle Baertling move things one step further forward than just mutual beneficiation, having created a kind of a symbiosis in their collaboration, which was particularly reflected in consummate projects of interiors, the first one of which was the lobby in one of the high-rise buildings – the Hotorget tower block in Stockholm. This project articulated the concept of an «aesthetical space» developed by the creative duo, the concept of inseparable unity of architecture and art. In 1962 Hellden invited Baertling to work on the University of Stockholm buildings: according to the former, the decoration of the university lobby was meant to be «an experiment with the new form of space, which – in the language of sculpture – opens outwards». The project has not been implemented, butfacilitatedfurtherdevelopment of the creative method of the duet, which was reproduced in work on the Council for Culture and in projects where abstract art was used to decorate public space, for example, the monumental sculpture for Serges Torg square in Stockholm. 15.11.07–10.01.08 | hyPeRfUNctioN – on the construction of realities in architecture. | Aedes Gallery, berlin, Germany | www.aedes-arc.de The major focus of the «Hyperfunction» exhibition is placed upon constructing reality and turning hyper-reality into existence. Within the framework of this interdisciplinary project the viability of architectural practice in the future is being discussed. Concentration of the design process and getting immersed in the investigation of architecture limitations imposed by conventional techniques constitute the core concept of the exhibition, where works of such young experiment-lovers as Teis Draiby and Karen Gamborg from Denmark and Nadine Jerchau from Switzerland are presented. According to the curators, the «reality of space» that we create is based above all things on sensory perception, on subjective, dynamic and multi-faceted process of selection and interpretation of sensory impressions. This is why the priority aspect in creating such projectsisthearchitect’sindividual character, and the process of creation becomes multi-faceted and represents not only the means, but to certain extend the result, too. The latter is reflected in the works presented at the exhibition. The interactive installation «Time Stretcher» by Teis Draiby deals with the integration of time as an indispensable element into the architectural project context. Nadine Jerchau studies the social integration of architecture. Karen Gamborg reveals the meaning of such a classic means of design as an architectural draft. That way
Architekturmuseum, frankfurt am main, Germany | www.dam-online.de The exhibition has a structure of a chronicle, since its main idea is to present promising architects from South Korea to the European public, providing an insight into the things happening there. Each of the sixteen studios taking part in the exhibition shows projects from the last ten years, and the range of these projects is enormous, as in virtually any other country – they range from single-family dwellings built in the traditional wooden style to major corporation offices. A separate chapter in the chronicle is devoted to the capital as the most representative city. In recent years there has been considerable pressure on Seoul with its population reaching 10 million people. While ranking second in population density, the Korean capital has a comfortable low density of structures and is at the end of the list here. Vertical density becomes the only possible solution, yet at the same time this prompts constant changes in culture and collective living habits. This aspect attaches an absolutely special colouring to Korean architecture, because height growth seems to be most logical, if one establishes analogy with the nature. mAde iN chiNA 03.11.07–06.01.08 | made in china | dansk Arkitektur center, copenhagen, denmark | www.dac.dk TheysaytheChinesearchitecture is flourishing.
