judges everything the first one proposed and the second one designed, not letting them step over the boundaries of the architectural taste, go against their professional conscience, to go below the level he himself set for himself. The third is the custodian Juvenal wrote about in his "Satires". ”Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?”. Who is going to guard the guards? Who is going to judge an architect? Only an architect himself. And the stricter judge he is to himself, the higher is the probability that he will create something significant. The good or even the very good architects create due to their artistic talents or practical skills, or a combination of the two. But to become one of the best, one needs the Third, who will impersonate the highest form of professional responsibility of the architect to add to the absolute freedom of the First and the weighted rationalism of the Second. The First Skuratov is seen to just a few, probably only to his closest people and colleagues. We all know the Second very well. It’s him who controls the work of the Bureau, holds negotiations with the customers, he also speaks to journalists and swears at construction sites, and he is seen at the architectural events (lately, more and more seldom). The Third is complicated. If not for the rumors about his despotism towards his employees and several stories of serious conflicts with officials who tried to distort his projects, I could say it's only him who sees the Third in person. I dare say I once met him. It was 5 or 6 years ago at the Architect’s Breakfast during the ArchMoscow, where besides the architects were also developers. Among a diplomatic exchange of opinions about the complexities of market economy that pushes the developers to commit unhandsome actions against the designers, Skuratov exploded and very clearly explained to the representative of Capital Group why he considers inacceptable the breach of author’s rights and contractual obligations this company committed against Eric van Egeraat. This was the first and the last time when I saw an architect who was publicly defending his colleague without being connected to him by

any interest and being conscious about the fact that he is destroying any possibility of working for Capital Group in the future. The impression from this explosion was so strong that it influenced both my perception of Sergey Skuratov personally and my perception of what professional honor and professional solidarity is. Later I was disappointed not to find any trace of these qualities in other architects (especially officially appointed to do what Skuratov did that morning). However, public activity does not tempt the Third. He deals with architecture, just like the two other Skuratovs. Thank God! The three of them have done and still do (whatever it takes) what was seemed impossible in Russia. They build splendid houses with an ingenuity and taste and the level of architectural and construction quality that everybody considered impossible. Sergey Skuratov (or the three of them) proved the opposite. It can and must be done even if the price to pay is the everyday heartache, in the heart that is one for three.

Первого Скуратова видели немногие, ве- роятно, только самые близкие люди и колле- ги. Второго мы все очень хорошо знаем. Это он руководит своим бюро, он ведет перегово- ры с заказчиками, он же дает интервью жур- налистам и матерится на стройках, и его мы видим на архитектурных тусовках (правда, в последнее время все реже). С Третьим все сложнее. Если бы не слухи о свойственной Скуратову деспотичности в работе с подчи- ненными и несколько историй о серьезных конфликтах Скуратова с чиновниками, пы- тавшимися изуродовать его проекты, можно было бы утверждать, что только он сам знает Третьего в лицо. Пожалуй, я рискну предположить, что од- нажды мне довелось столкнуться с ним. Это случилось лет 5 или 6 назад, на «Завтраке ар- хитектора» во время «АрхМосквы», на кото- ром присутствовали не только архитекторы, но и девелоперы. Посреди дипломатично- го обмена мнениями о сложностях рыноч- ной экономики, толкающей застройщиков на не самые благородные поступки в отноше- нии проектировщиков, Скуратов взорвался и очень четко объяснил представителю «Капи- тал Групп», почему он считает недопустимым нарушение авторских прав и договорных обязательств, которые эта компания позволи- ла себе в отношении Эрика ван Эгераата. Это был первый и последний раз, когда на моих глазах архитектор открыто высказался в за- щиту своего коллеги, не будучи связанным с ним никакими общими интересами, прекрас- но отдавая отчет, что тем самым он перечер- кивает возможность когда-либо делать про- екты для «Капитал Групп». Впечатление от этой вспышки было настолько сильным, что повлияло на мое восприятие не только лично Сергея Скуратова, но и на представление о том, что такое профессиональная честь и це- ховая солидарность. Впоследствии мне было сложно не находить даже призрака этих ка- честв в других архитекторах (особенно офи- циально уполномоченных делать то, что в то утро сделал Скуратов). Но общественная деятельность не прель-

щает Третьего. Он, как и два других Скурато- ва, занимается архитектурой. И слава богу! Ведь втроем они сделали и делают (чего бы им это ни стоило) то, что казалось невозмож- ным в России, строят потрясающие дома с та- кой изобретательностью, с таким вкусом, на таком уровне архитектурного и строительно- го качества, который все считали невозмож- ным. А Сергей Скуратов (единый в трех ли- цах) доказал обратное. Можно и нужно, даже если расплачиваться за такую архитектуру приходится каждодневной болью в сердце, одном на троих.
