The principle of modernism — a large and simple external form — is realized in the house on Gogo- levsky Boulevard as clearly as in the famous Narkomfin Building (a renowned example of Construc- tivist architecture — an apartment block, designed for high rank employees of the Commissariat of Finance). Residential units in these houses, with all their expressiveness, reflect the concept of mul- tipurposeness and the tough social-utopian idea that underlies these projects. The task, set for recon- struction of one of these apartments, was to individualize the space at the same time following the functional and concise approach of the authors of the preceding era. The main feature of the apart- ment — the contrast between its high and low parts — is emphasized by the rarefied emptiness of the double height living room and the maximum functional saturation of the lower zone, which includes a kitchen, a dining room, a bedroom and a bed-bench area serving as a library. Without exaggeration, every centimeter of this space in all its dimensions is carefully thought out, well-calculated and per- fectly arranged.
