ARCHITECTURE “ VESHNYAKI” SHOPPING CENTER
93
The building of the “Veshnyaki” Shopping Mall was constructed on Vesh- nyakovskaya Street in Moscow in 1986. Nearly 30 years later, Boris Uborev- ich-Borovskiy, developed a project for the reconstruction of this site. The ar- chitect convinced the customer that a modern shopping centre cannot be a «box» made up of blank walls. It was agreed that transparent facades of the building will draw attention to its appearance and interior design alike: it can be seen through transparent glass that the shopping mall is full of life, and at night the light from the windows illuminates the street outside. Five floors of the Shopping Mall have a common atrium with escalators laid through it. Visually they resemble the Moebius strip and refer to graphic illu- sions by Escher, while functionally they allow visitors to move from one floor to another quickly and comfortably. Minimalism and a focus on functionality are the main criteria that the architect followed when working on the proj- ect. He was able to achieve a curious effect where design of options that are standard for any shopping mall - those related to logistics, comfort and safety, imbued the building with a unique aesthetic quality.
