ARCHITECTURE “ROSATOM” PAVILION AT VDNKH 37

The design of the “Rosatom” Pavilion that UB. DESIGN Studio worked on in collaboration with A+A Architectural Group and Cardin Ramirez Ju- lien Inc. is centered around the idea of popularization of nuclear industry of Russia. The collaborators developed a striking image with a strong fo- cus on such themes as the environment and cutting edge R&D products in the field of nuclear energy. The central space of the Pavilion resembles a picture of the atom and electrons spinning around it familiar to everyone from a high school physics course. VDNKh (The Exhibition of Russia’s Na- tional Economy Achievements) is the right place for such direct interpreta- tion of the nuclear energy theme that the guests can see even as they walk to the building. Do not forget that we are talking about VDNKh where each Pavilion is not only a repository of achievements displayed there as exhib- its, but also an exhibit in itself. The Pavilion’s geometry is based on an in-

terplay: the dominant object, a nucleus with electrons that we have already mentioned, is placed between the buildings that are significantly less artful in shape but just as striking in terms of content and visual images. This combination symbolizes the humanity’s desire to have control over the atom and use science as a means to make the world a more harmonious place. The facades of the rectangular buildings that the sphere is «locked» between are richly glazed and partly are a «mesh» consisting of dots and lines. Visually, this pattern is reminiscent of a kind of electronic code or matrix. Inside, the Pavilion features halls for thematic conferences and exhibitions, as well as multimedia spaces where the visitors can learn about the history of development of the country’s nuclear energy industry and the latest developments in the field.
