ARCHITECTURE PAVILION 75 AT VDNKH

105

The area of VDNKh (the Exhibition of Achievements of National Econo- my) no longer meets the latest requirements in terms of exhibition tech- nology, hence the idea of building an exhibition complex with the useful area of 150-180 thousand sq. m between Mira Avenue and the north- ern entrance. Pavilion No.75, the largest one at VDNKh to date, has be- come the pilot project for the new exhibition grounds. With the display area of more than 20,000 sq. m, the pavilion offers conference halls, busi- ness meeting rooms, and recreation areas on its three levels in addition to the exhibition modules. The key town-planning and architectural con- cept of the Pavilion is built on references to the times when VDNKh was just established and the Northern Entrance arch served as the main entrance to the exhibition grounds. The arch was placed on the axis that played an important role in the planning structure of the whole area. The compo-

sitional idea for the architectural aspect of the new Pavilion also builds on axial symmetry — in today's inter- pretation, the axis passes through the building and is aligned with the entrance to the adjacent Pavilion 69. The structural glass facades reflect the architectural «voice» of the arch as the key element of the composition but are at the same time neutral. To reinforce the idea of equal scale of the architectural volumes and the link- ing role of the buildings in the overall ensemble, the architects came up with the idea of a flying tape-shaped roof that bends and turns, reflecting the axial composition of the entire complex.
