Уважаемые друзья! Мне очень приятно поздравить вас с откры- тием замечательного проекта и вдвойне приятно, что это знаковое для российского современного ис- кусства событие происходит при поддержке Мини- стерства культуры. Уральская биеннале объединяет российских ху- дожников и кураторов с ярчайшими зарубежными специалистами. Таким образом культура нашей стра- ны гармонично интегрируется в международный контекст, о чём предыдущие поколения, к сожале- нию, могли только мечтать. Кроме того, новую жизнь получают индустриальные пространства в разных го- родах на Урале, что даёт возможность переосмыслить будущее всего региона. Не могу не поблагодарить за цитату Иосифа Бродского, использованную в названии основно- го проекта, куратора Биеннале Ярославу Бубнову. Мне кажется, очень важно не бояться сочетать эле- менты классической и актуальной культуры, потому, что выставочные проекты, которые такими деталя- ми помогают невовлечённым в арт-контекст зрите- лям найти своё место в огромном арт-мире, понять его, очень нужны. Только так можно преодолеть со- храняющееся и по сей день неприятие современного искусства массовой аудиторией. Большое спасибо Ярославе Бубновой, комиссару Биеннале Алисе Прудниковой, кураторам спецпроек- тов Дмитрию Озеркову, Валентину Дьяконову, Вячес- лаву Самодурову и всем организаторам за проделан- ную огромную работу. Желаю всем участникам Биеннале удачи и яр- ких свершений, а гостям – самых приятных впечат- лений и всего наилучшего.

Dear friends! I am delighted to congratulate you all on the open- ing of this fascinating project, doubly so as this landmark event for contemporary Russian art takes place with sup- port from the Russian Ministry of Culture. The Ural Biennial brings together Russian artists and curators and the most prominent foreign practitio- ners in the field, thereby providing for a harmonious in- tegration of our culture into the international context of contemporary art, something that the earlier gener- ations of Russian artists and curators could, regrettably, only dream of. Furthermore, this project infuses new life into old industrial spaces across the various cities of the Urals, yielding a new vision of the future for the entire region. I cannot help but thank Iara Boubnova, the curator of the Biennial’s main project, for the quote from one of Joseph Brodsky’s poems that she used as her epigraph. I believe it is very important to take the risk of bring- ing together elements of traditional culture with those of contemporary art. Exhibition projects like this are thus crucial as they build on this amalgamation of the tra- ditional and then modern in order to attract new view- ers—those with no previous exposure to and experience of contemporary art—and to help them find their own place in this huge and complex world, to have a better understanding of it. This seems to be the only way to overcome the persistent rejection of contemporary art on the part of the mass audience. I would like to express my profound gratitude to Iara Boubnova, to Alisa Prudnikova, the commissioner of the Biennial, as well as to the curatorial team of the spe- cial projects: Dimitri Ozerkov, Valentin Dyakonov, Slava Samodurov, and to all those behind the organization of this project for all the hard work they have put into the making of this event. I would like to wish good luck and new fascinat- ing endeavors to all participants of the Biennial, and to the guests—the most remarkable encounter with the art- works and all the best.
